UPDATED: Dead Whale Found In Brooklyn Heights Towed To New Jersey

A whale washed up near Pier 4 this morning. It is unclear how the whale died.

UPDATE, 4:52 p.m.: It is believed that the dead whale was impaled by a luxury cruise liner. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration received photos and reports of a Sei whale believed to be the one found this morning stuck on the front of a cruise ship Sunday.

A dead whale that washed up on the shores near Pier 4 has been hauled away, officials said.

The whale turned up near Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn Heights at around 10 a.m. today, an NYPD spokeswoman told DNA Info.

The NYPD Harbor Unit towed the creature with the assistance of the Army Corp of Engineers to the New Jersey side of the harbor.

It remains unknown what caused the whale's death or what species it was.
