Massive 80 Flatbush Development Voted Down By Community Board

Community Board 2's Land Use Committee voted against the planned 80 Flatbush project, which would bring two giant towers to the area.

BOERUM HILL, NY — A massive development that would bring two giant towers to Flatbush Avenue was voted down by the Community Board this week, the Brooklyn Paper reported.

Community Board 2's Land Use Committee unanimously rejected the 80 Flatbush development — which would bring a 74- and 34-story tower to the neighborhood — on Wednesday because they thought the project was too large for the area, the Brooklyn Paper reported.

Developer Alloy plans to redevelop the Khalil Gibran International Academy — bordered by Schermerhorn Street, Flatbush Avenue, State Street and Third Avenue — with a larger building for the academy, a new elementary school, offices and 900 residential units, according to plans.

The project has been fiercely opposed by residents and elected officials who feel it's too dense and tall for the low-rise neighborhood.

The Boerum Hill Association started a petition last year calling on the city to stop the project because the towers "will not integrate or respect the scale and design of our adjacent brownstone neighborhood."

The development still needs to go in front of the full Community Board 2 for a vote, which is scheduled for May 9. The application will then move to Borough President Eric Adams, City Planning, the City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio for approvals.
