Massive Bastille Day Celebration Returns To Cobble Hill

Food, music and sand in the streets.

COBBLE HILL, BROOKLYN — A massive Bastille Day celebration is returning to Cobble Hill this year outside of Bar Tabac.

For the 16th year in a row, the bar will host a celebration that includes live music, food and the game of Petanque, which is similar to Bocce, on Sunday, July 16.

Seventy-two teams of three compete in the tournament every year, which is held on the streets outside of the bar, covered in sand.

"Bar Tabac bistro has been celebrating the French Independence Day, also known as Bastille Day, for the past 15 years," the bar's website says.

"72 teams of three people will compete on the packed sand courts, as the music, amazing food, cold beverages, and the summer sun all gather around what has become one of the largest Petanque Events in North America. 20,000 attendees will once again mill about the booths of local businesses and chow down on Bar Tabac specialties."
