CARROLL GARDENS, BROOKLYN — Education officials will start discussing how to rezone a local elementary school during a meeting on Thursday as part of a plan to deal with overcrowding and make the best use of District 15's school space.

The city's Office of District Planning will present its preliminary plan to District 15's Community Education Council at 6:30 p.m. in P.S. 32, the elementary school that might be rezoned.

City officials have not released details about what that plan will include yet, but in a previous presentation made in November, the office identified rezoning P.S. 32 as a possible way to help with overcrowding problems in the district's elementary schools.

P.S. 32, which is undergoing a renovation to add 436 seats to its facility, is one of 22 of the district's 26 elementary schools that are over utilized, according to that presentation.

Brooklyn Bridge Parents group guessed that this may mean other nearby school zones might be reduced and instead sent to take the new seats at P.S. 32. The organization suspected nearby P.S. 29 or P.S. 58 would be the most likely options.

Though, in the city officials' presentation, other schools seem to be in a more dire need of relief. P.S. 29 and P.S. 58 did not make a list of the top 10 most overcrowded elementary schools in the district. P.S. 32 was at the top of that list, over-utilized at 181 percent, followed by P.S. 39, P.S. 172 and P.S. 107.

The preliminary meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at P.S. 32, which is found at 317 Hoyt Street. Attendees should enter on Union Street, officials said.

The Office of District Planning did not return a request for comment about the meeting, but previously told Patch that it will be an "initial engagement meeting" to start the process. More information about the plans will likely be available after this first meeting, the officials said.
