NYCHA Residents Without Power On Holidays Get Helping Hand

Local politicians and a nonprofit are raising money for these residents who won't be able to cook on Christmas.

BOERUM HILL, BROOKLYN — Residents without power in an NYCHA development will get a little help during the holidays from politicians and a local nonprofit.

About 37 units in the Wyckoff Houses in Boerum Hill were without gas over the weekend and will continue to be during the holidays, Councilman Brad Lander said in a Facebook post. The NYCHA is working to fix the outages, he added.

In the meantime, a local nonprofit and elected officials have started a campaign to make sure these residents still have hot food to eat over the holiday week.

The campaign will collect donations to cover the cost of gift cards for local supermarkets or restaurants open this week.

"I hope you’ll consider donating to help our neighbors in this very difficult and frustrating situation," Lander said.

Residents who want to help out can visit the Fifth Avenue Committee's website and designate their donation to "Wyckoff Food Help."

"I hope that wherever you are this holiday season, it is filled with joy, peace, and healing," Lander said. "And that we can do our part to give the same to our neighbors in the Wyckoff Houses."
