UPDATE: Pedestrian Killed on Atlantic Was 66-Year-Old Muyassar Moustapha

Moustapha, a Syrian immigrant, reportedly ran Oriental Pastry & Grocery with his brothers.

The 66-year-old man killed while crossing Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill on Sunday night has been identified by police as Bay Ridge resident Muyassar Moustapha.

Moustapha was hurrying cross Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street around 8:30 p.m. when he was struck and killed by a 26-year-old man driving a Mercedes-Benz, police say.

According to Tripoli Restaurant, a Lebanese-food joint located at the intersection, Moustapha worked at Oriental Pastry & Grocery a little further down Atlantic. The popular Middle-Eastern shop is reportedly a Cobble Hill staple, run by a Syrian immigrant and his brothers.

Indeed — Riad Saleh, 53, a friend of the victim’s, tells the New York Daily News that Moustapha owned Oriental Pastry & Grocery.

Saleh had gone outside to look at the scene, only to realize the victim was his pal, who he was supposed to meet up with later Sunday night.

“Most nights I come here and we sit on the stoop and talk. I called him tonight and he said he was in Key Foods and he’ll see me later,” said Saleh.

“But then when I came out here I saw him laying in the street and there was so much blood coming out of his mouth. He had so much blood on his face.”

Police sources tell the Daily News that Moustapha had just purchased bought a carton of pistachio Häagen-Dazs ice cream across the street, and that he didn’t use a crosswalk on his way back.

NYPD investigators determined in the crash’s immediate aftermath that the Benz had been traveling eastbound on Atlantic when the pedestrian — heading south — attempted to cross the wide, busy roadway.

“That car threw his body maybe 20 feet in the air,” a witness tells the Daily News. “He hit him at full impact.”

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, and was not immediately charged with a crime. An NYPD investigation is ongoing.
