MORICHES, NY — A deceased humpback whale has been spotted floating near Moriches Inlet, officials said Friday.

According to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, a call came in Friday morning about the whale, which was floating about one mile offshore near the inlet. The whale was initially reported by the US Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound and a private vessel that called the New York Stat stranding hotline.

AMSEAS said they are working on a response plan with the Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/NOAA Fisheries, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Suffolk County parks, and US Fish and Wildlife Service.
