Moriches Man Charged In Crash That Left Pedestrian Dead: Cops
The pedestrian was struck by two vehicles; the driver of the first fled the scene but was later found and arrested, police say.
RIVERHEAD, NY — A Moriches man has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash in Riverhead Monday that left a pedestrian dead, police said.
A Riverhead man, 72, died after he was struck by two vehicles while crossing West Main Street , police said. The first driver fled the scene, police said.
Following a series of tips received from the public, detectives were able to locate the involved vehicle at an auto body shop in the Riverhead area, police said. The owner and driver of the vehicle, Christopher Oborski, 45, was later located, arrested, and charged with one count of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in a fatality, a felony, police said. He was transported to Riverhead Police headquarters, processed and held for arraignment, police said.

The name of the victim is not being released, pending notification to next of kin.
According to Riverhead Town Police, at 5:06 p.m. Monday, numerous reports came in about a motor vehicle crash on Route 25 just west of Marcy Avenue.

Callers reported that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle and that CPR was being initiated by bystanders, police said. Upon arrival, responding patrol officers found a man lying in the roadway with first aid being administered, police said.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded, treated the patient, and transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said.
Preliminary information indicated that the pedestrian appeared to have been crossing Main Street from south to north; when he was standing in the middle of the roadway, he was initially struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound and then by a second vehicle traveling westbound, police said.
The driver of the first vehicle, believed to be a small white SUV, did not stop at the scene, police said. The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene following the crash, police said.
