New Principal Takes Helm At William Floyd Middle School

MORICHES, NY — A new principal has taken the helm at the William Floyd Middle School.

The William Floyd School District has appointed Matthew Sanders to the post, serving more than 1,100 students in grades six through eight in a school that employs more than 80 faculty members and 50 professional staff members, the district said.

Sanders is a familiar face, having served the William Floyd school community for the past 16 years, most recently as an assistant principal at William Floyd High School. Throughout his career, he has held various roles including as a special education teacher, extracurricular advisor, union representative and coach, the district said.

“Mr. Sanders has established himself as a highly-respected and ethical leader approaching all situations with careful deliberation and sound judgment,” said Kathleen Keane, assistant superintendent for secondary instruction and administration. “He has been successful in all of his roles throughout his career and we are excited to work with him in this new capacity.”

As principal, Sanders "will lead a shared vision of learning to promote the success of every student and employee, building upon a strong foundation while nurturing and sustaining a positive school culture and strong instructional program," the district sai.

Sanders said he is happy to be onboard.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work in partnership with all members of the William Floyd Middle School community,” Sanders said. “Together with the faculty and staff, we will continue to cultivate a positive atmosphere where all students can prosper both academically and socially. It is my goal to help students prepare to become successful in high school and beyond.”

Sanders earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in special education from Providence College and his Master of Arts in liberal studies from Stony Brook University; he also holds advanced certificates in school building leadership and school district leadership from Stony Brook University.
