Severe Thunderstorm Watch In Effect For Long Island

There's a chance of severe thunderstorms on Long Island Wednesday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service says. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

The main threat with any thunderstorms will be strong, damaging winds and hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, the NWS says.

A tornado touched down in Manorville on Monday.

There's a 40-50 percent chance of rain the rest of the day Wednesday so the island could very well avoid any storms, but if they do rumble through, they will likely be packing a punch.

Thursday looks gorgeous with a high near 73 and then attention will turn to potential impacts from Hurricane Dorian on Friday as it passes well south and east of the island.

Wednesday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday- Partly sunny, with a high near 73. Northeast wind 5 to 9 mph.

Thursday Night- A 20 percent chance of rain after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. East wind 6 to 13 mph.

Friday- A 40 percent chance of rain, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Breezy, with a northeast wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.

Friday Night- A 50 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. Breezy.

Saturday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.

Saturday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 62.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.
