MORICHES, NY — The William Floyd School District's proposed 2018 to 2019 school budget of $240,038,811 passed, with 1,048 "yes" votes and 683 "no" ballots cast, district officials said.
The budget reflects a tax levy increase of 2.03 percent, below the state mandated tax cap; the budget also indicates a 1.57 percent increase over last year's budget.
In addition, district officials said, the budget maintains all current instructional, music, fine arts, athletics, co-curricular programs and other educational opportunities for students, and adds additional opportunities for students, approximately 20 teaching positions at various levels and more. Five additional elementary teachers will reduce class size to 23 to 24 students per class — from 29 to 32 at certain
levels due to increased enrollment — providing more opportunities for exploration and collaboration. The budget also sets the foundation for the expansion of academic offerings and implementation of a nine-period middle school day, district officials said.
