Cyclist Crashes With Garbage Truck In Central Park, Police Say

The crash occurred just two days after the park was declared car free.

CENTRAL PARK — A cyclist was sent to the hospital Friday morning after crashing with a garbage truck in Central Park, an NYPD spokesman said.

The cyclist was traveling south on West Drive near West 80th Street around 6 a.m. when they observed a garbage truck pulling on to the road, the spokesman said. When the cyclist attempted to stop, they skidded and collided with the truck, the NYPD spokesman said.

The cyclist was taken to an area hospital for lacerations to their right arm, an NYPD spokesman said. The garbage truck driver stayed on the scene of the collision and has not been charged, the spokesman said.

The crash comes just two days after city officials and safe streets advocates celebrated a ban on private vehicles from Central Park's loop roads below 72nd Street. Cars were banned from loop roads above 72nd Street in 2015. These roads include West Drive, East Drive, Center Drive and Terrace Drive.

Emergency response vehicles and maintenance vehicles are still able to access the loop drives.
