Cyclist Critical After Central Park Crash With Pedestrian: Police

A man riding an e-bike crashed with a pedestrian Monday afternoon on Central Park's East Drive.

CENTRAL PARK, NY — A cyclist was hospitalized in critical condition Monday afternoon after crashing with a pedestrian in Central Park, police said.

The 43-year-old man was riding an e-bike on Central Park's East Drive around 3:30 p.m. when he hit a 77-year-old man, an NYPD spokesman said. The NYPD investigation into the crash is ongoing, and a department spokesman could not say whether the cyclist or the pedestrian had the right of way.

EMS took the 77-year-old to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for minor injuries, which is the same hospital where the cyclist was rushed, police said. The crash occurred on the East Drive near Terrace Drive, a popular route that connects East and West 72nd Street through the park.

Journalists covering the bike crash witness at least two separate crashes occur in the area in the aftermath. One of the crashes appeared to be the result of two cyclists crashing into each other and the other appeared to be a single-bike accident.

Police from the Central Park precinct were stationed near the crash scene Monday warning cyclists to slow down.
