Anti-White Slasher Arrested for Attack at Chelsea Deli: NYPD
Police arrested the man for using a crack pipe, only to connect him to the slashing as well, police said.
CHELSEA, NY — Police charged a man Friday in the case of a suspect who made anti-white comments before slashing a customer at Chelsea deli last month.
Jerry Bercy, 26, was arrested and charged with four crimes, with three of them falling under the category of a hate crime, police said. Bercy, from Canarsie, Brooklyn, was charged with assault as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime and stalking as a hate crime, as well criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
Bercy was taken into custody at Eighth Avenue and 24th Street on Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m. for possession of a crack pipe, after which police connected him to the slashing, an NYPD spokesman said. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance for that infraction, police said.

Bercy is due in court on Oct. 19 to deal with both the slashing attack and drug offense.
Police say Bercy slashed the wrist of a 40-year-old man with a knife at 6 a.m. inside Empire Deli on Ninth Avenue between West 24th and 25th streets on Sept. 23. Bercy made what police describe as "anti-white" statements toward the victim before cutting him on the left wrist.

In video shared by police, the two individuals can be seen fighting inside the store, with the man police say is Bercy shoving the victim against a deli display, slashing him and then fleeing out the front door.
