Chelsea Boozy Brunch Spot Is Under Review: Report

Chelsea residents say Il Bastardo patrons are often drunk and rowdy after leaving the restaurant.

CHELSEA, NY — A boozy brunch spot in Chelsea is being investigated by authorities after months of complaints from locals about the rowdy behavior of patrons who have had one too many mimosas, according to Chelsea Now.

Il Bastardo, which serves a weekend brunch special, is being reviewed by the State Liquor Authority. The agency hosted two hearings in April regarding the bar and restaurant, and is scheduled to hold a third in May, according to Chelsea Now.

"On weekends when they have their brunches, they seem to have fostered a culture of young people drinking to excess,” Council of Chelsea Block Associations (CCBA) President Bill Borock told Chelsea Now.

Residents have complained of Il Bastardo patrons vomiting and urinating near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 21st Street, among other displays of public drunkenness. Chelsea locals have been asking the mimosa-fueled eatery to tone it down for a while. Last year, the State Liquor Authority fined the restaurant $2,500, some months after Manhattan Community Board 4 wrote the restaurant's owner a stern letter asking the establishment to make some changes. The community board, however, has no punitive authority over the restaurant, and can only recommend changes.
