A former health center will be made into a nine-story hotel near Union Square, permits show.

UNION SQUARE, NY — A former health center will be transformed into a nine-story hotel near Union Square, records show.
A former location for the Institute for Family Health sold last year will be made into a nine-story hotel at 16 E. 16th St. near Union Square, according to permits filed with the Department of Buildings.
Permits dated Wednesday show there will be about 87 hotel rooms.

The design, by BKSK Architects, will utilize the existing facade of the six-story building. The structure will rise three stories higher than its current height, the permits say.
The hotel will have restaurants on the lower level and rooftop, a spa and gym, lounge, terrace access, and between 13 and 15 hotel rooms on the third through eighth floors, according to the permits, first reported by YIMBY New York.

The building was built in 1889. Last year, the building sold for $40 million.
Trevor Stahelski, listed in the permits for the owner, Gramercy Park House, LLC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Stahelski's other projects in Manhattan include a 12-story condo building with modern designs built into an existing historic facade on Mulberry Street, his website shows. He also owns rental buildings in Chelsea, the Lower East Side, the East Village, and Harlem.
