The Half King To Shutter After 18 Years In Chelsea

The long-time Chelsea bar and restaurant will close in January after serving the neighborhood for some two decades.

CHELSEA, NY — Neighborhood joint The Half King will shutter at the end of January after serving grub and good times for nearly two decades in Chelsea, the owners announced.

"We have had 18 wonderful years in the neighborhood but times have changed and we can no longer avoid financial reality," owners Scott Anderson, Nanette Burstein and Sebastian Junger wrote in a joint statement on the eatery's website.

"It is with very heavy hearts that we bid you all goodbye."

The 505 W. 23rd Street restaurant opened in 2000 as a meeting spot for those in the publishing and film industries. It quickly grew into a hub for the neighborhood's arts scene attracting writers, filmmakers and curators.

The spacious restaurant boasts an enclosed garden in the back and cafe tables out front with a cozy interior featuring lumber taken from a 200-year-old barn in Pennsylvania.

In additional to serving classic gastro-pub nosh and drinks, The Half King is known for its bi-monthly dining room slideshows of contemporary photojournalism and weekly readings for writers.

The Half King at 505 W. 23rd St. will close by the end of January and is open seven days a week from noon to 4 a.m.
