Marlene Dumas Exhibit To Open In Chelsea

The new exhibit comes from one of the most expensive living female artists.

CHELSEA, NY — The South African artist Marlene Dumas has a new exhibit opening in Chelsea in April this at the David Zwirner gallery.

This will be Dumas's first solo show in New York since 2010. Dumas was dubbed the "the world most expensive living female artist," in 2005, when a her painting "The Teacher (sub a)" sold for $3.34 million. Dumas maintained her reign as the most expensive female artist alive for a year, before a sculpture by the artist Louise Bourgeois sold for $4 million. Since then, Dumas has remained one of the priciest living women in the art world. Her painting "The Visitor" sold for $6.5 million in 2008.

The exhibit, which will include several new painting from Dumas, will open April 28 at the gallery, located at 537 W. 20th St.

The show will feature new paintings including "monumental nude figures to intimately scaled portraits" the gallery said in a statement. In addition, the artist will debut a series created for a Dutch translation of the Shakespeare poem "Venus and Adonis," which tell the story of Venus, goddess of love, and her relationship with Adonis.
