Museum Of Candy To Open In Chelsea

The museum will be dedicated to all things candy, and is set to open this summer.

CHELSEA, NY — The world's first Museum of Candy will open this summer in a converted Chelsea church, the company behind the niche exhibition announced.

The international sweetshop the Sugar Factory is opening the Chelsea museum as the first of three candy-themed museums around the world.

The Sugar Factory said the new museum would feature 15 different rooms dedicated to candy of all different types, plus plenty of opportunities to take photos with Instagram-friendly backdrops. The museum will include the world’s largest gummy bear, a unicorn built completely out of candy, and other sweet-fueled exhibits.

The space will also include a restaurant and outdoor cafe, along with a dessert marketplace, the company said in a statement.

The museum will open in the Limelight Club space, located at 656 Sixth Ave. which was once home to the city’s techno and goth music scene.

The Limelight’s future as a haven for candy-lovers looking for a good Instagram backdrop is a far cry from its most famous life as a dance and music club. After the former church was deconsecrated, it rose to prominence in the 1990s as a popular — and occasionally infamous — club. Most recently, the former church was converted into a high-end gym.
