FLATIRON, NY — New Yorkers can't get enough of the sushi burrito craze. A new restaurant dedicated to sushi burritos and the Hawaiian raw fish speciality poke (poh-kay) opened Nov. 30 at 35 West 26th St. between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, multiple news outlets reports.
Maui Onion focuses on fresh and simple ingredients in a fast-casual setting. Patrons can choose between 12 different dishes such as tuna, salmon, lemon-garlic chicken, shrimp, octopus or tofu. Each of these can be prepared as a bowl with white or brown rice, a salad, a burrito or a hand-roll known as tamaki. Each meal costs about $13.

Il Ji Jung, who worked at Oiji in the East Village and Jungsik in TriBeCa, created Maui Onion's menu with established restaurateur Donna Kang, DNAinfo reports. Kang's restaurants include Dong Chun Hong in Midtown West, Mapo Galmaegi in Flushing and Abiko Curry in Koreatown.
The restaurant is housed in a 2,200 square foot space, QSR Magazine reports. The design is clean and comfortable with potted plants, natural wood floors, and earth-toned accents. Diners can eat at the bar on teak wood benches or at the large communal tables. The steel poke bar lets people watch as their food is made.
