Permits Filed for Massive Hudson Yards Development 'The Spiral'

'The Spiral' will boast a 'cascading series of landscaped terraces and hanging gardens' wrapped around its exterior.

CHELSEA, NY — A developer filed plans on Thursday to build a massive, 64-story office building known as "The Spiral" in Hudson Yards. Tishman Speyer, the developer, plans to build the 1,005-foot-tall monstrosity with 2.2 million square feet of commercial space, according to the permits it filed with the city.

"The Spiral" will sit across from the entrance to the new Hudson Yards 7 train station at 509 W. 34th St. between 10th and 11th avenues, according to Tishman's website. The building is so big it's being given a second address: 66 Hudson Boulevard.

Tishman's website describes the building's design as a "cascading series of landscaped terraces and hanging gardens" around "a building with readily accessible outdoor space catering to a dynamic, mixed-use urban community." Photos show floor-to-ceiling windows and an abundance of plants and light in the interiors.

Tishman filed an application with the New York Industrial Development Agency saying the total construction costs of "The Spiral" would amount to $3.2 billion, the Real Deal reported in July. The developer also paid $438 million for the land in 2014. It also had to pay just two tenants $25 million in a settlement in 2014 to get them to vacate their small apartment building at W. 35th Street and 10th Avenue.
