Part Of Union Square Coffee Shop Will Be Used For New Restaurants

Three of the new retail spaces will be reserved for restaurants, Eater reported.

CHELSEA, NY — The space of the recently shuttered Coffee Shop at Union Square will be split into four new storefronts and feature at least three restaurants, Eater reported.

The former home of the famed Brazilian-American restaurant at 29 Union Square West will be replaced with four new tenants, three of which will be eateries, the building's property manager Eric Gural of GFP Real Estate told Eater.

Gural told the website that he would not comment on rumors that Chase Bank is poised to take over part of the vacant restaurant. A source associated with the property told Eater that Chase Bank is currently in talks for space.

The Coffee Shop shuttered on Oct. 11 after a 28-year run of serving classic greasy spoon fare and more creative eats such as cold caipirinhas, coconut shrimp and guava crêpes. The eatery rose to fame after appearances on HBO's "Sex and the City" and became a popular spot for celeberties and tourists.

The restaurant closed after struggling with rising rents, according to co-owner Charles Milite.
