Water Main Break Floods Intersection in Chelsea

A water main break at Ninth Avenue and 28th Street was flooding the street on Wednesday morning.

CHELSEA, NY — A water main break in Chelsea caused flooding on Wednesday morning in the intersection of 28th Street and Ninth Avenue. A contractor with the Department of Design and Construction may have broken the pipe while doing roadwork, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said, but the exact cause was still under investigation.

The leak was stopped and repair work took place throughout much of the day. A DEP spokeswoman said the repairs were completed at about 5:30 p.m. and all customers had water. All streets were re-opened soon after, the DEP said.

A representative from Church of the Holy Apostles, which is located right on the corner of Ninth Avenue and 28th Street, said the flooding was "mostly contained to the street" and the church was not flooded at all. The water was also flooding the street outside Ideal Marketplace at 317 Ninth Avenue, between 28th and 29th streets, but store manager Randy Phillips said they did not see any flooding in the store itself.

FDNY responded to the area, but said there were no injuries.

Video from the scene, just a few blocks southwest of Madison Square Garden, showed cars and bikes driving through the water Wednesday morning before the streets were eventually shut down by DEP workers.
