COMMACK, NY — The Commack School District announced Friday it will be closing all schools for the next two weeks — from March 16 through March 17 — due to concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus.

As of Friday, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among any staff members or students in the Commack School District, the district wrote on its website.

"As has been acknowledged by [Gov. Andrew Cuomo], it is possible for people to act as carriers of COVID-19 without presenting any symptoms," the district said. "Numerous colleges and universities have closed and many parents are reporting these students are returning home with illnesses. Diagnosed cases in New York State are rising. Therefore, the Commack School District has made a determination to close schools for a two-week period. Based on guidance from county, state, and federal offices, this time period of limited social contact may help deter the spread of COVID-19."

In order to allow for the two-week cancellation, the district is moving spring recess and will use other days available to it in the school calendar.

Below is an explanation of changes to the school calendar:

  • All school activities including athletics are canceled during this time period.
  • At this time, it is anticipated schools will reopen Monday, March 30. However, this will be revisited if necessary.
  • As a result of the above, please be aware that schools will be in session Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17, as well as, Friday, May 22.
  • However, for now, schools will be closed Thursday, April 9 and Friday, April 10. If this changes, the district will notify you accordingly.

Adjustments may be made based on the volatile nature of the coronavirus, the district said.

"We understand closing schools will affect families in many ways, and we thank you for your understanding and cooperation," the district said. "Know that we do not make these decisions lightly. Please also know that staying at home, not engaging in social situations, as well as not visiting public places is the best way to protect you and your family from contracting Coronavirus. Please follow Department of Health guidelines on social-distancing and visiting public places."
