Jewish New Year Services Begin Wednesday

A look at the High Holiday schedule for Rosh Hashana.

Beginning Wednesday night, Jewish residents around Commack will celebrate the Rosh Hashana, the celebration of the new year, according to the Hebrew calendar.

Wednesday night marks the start of year 5774, according to the Hebrew calendar. The holiday, which lasts for two days, is considered one of the holiest times of the year and a time for renewal. Traditions that have been passed down for thousands of years, such as the call of the shofar, are still carried out in Jewish temples all over the world.

Have a friend or family member celebrating Rosh Hashana? A common greeting on is "shana tovah u'metukah," which is Hebrew for "a good and sweet new year." Traditional foods such as apples and honey, raisin challah, honey cake and other treats follow along with the idea of a sweet, new year.
