Library Asks Patrons to Fill Out Online Survey Starting Friday

Smithtown Special Library Districts asks cardholders about their use of computers and the Internet.

Residents who use any of the Smithtown Special Library District's four branches are being asked to take a few moments to complete an online survey.

Smithtown Special Library District will be conducting an Impact Survey, coordinated by the University of Washington Information School, asking how patrons are using the library's computers and Internet, and whether it has had a positive impact on their life.

"This information will help the library improve its technology services and communicate the value of providing free access to computers and the Internet within the community," reads a statement from library officials.

Starting on Friday, Nov. 15, an anonymous online survey will be available on the library's website in both English and Spanish. It should take the average user 10-15 minutes to complete.

Survey responses will be collected through Dec. 6.

The Impact Survey is a result of a successful research initiative run by the University of Washington, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2009, the University of Washington Information School conducted, "Opportunity for All: How the American Public Benefits from Internet Access at U.S. Libraries," the first large-scale investigation of the ways library patrons use computers and the Internet at public libraries.
