1 Dead, 1 Seriously Hurt In Wrong-Way Long Island Crash

An SUV driver is dead while the man who drove a pickup truck the wrong way is in serious condition, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — A man is dead following a wrong-way collision on the Sunken Meadow State Parkway in Smithtown on Friday evening, New York State Police said.

Joseph Norris, 38, of Babylon, was driving a pickup truck southbound in the northbound lanes when he struck an SUV being driven by Anthony Mariano, 44, of Kings Park, at 7:29 p.m. north of exit SM3, police said.

Mariano died at the scene, while Norris was brought to Southside Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The Sunken Meadow State Parkway was closed northbound after the crash. Police are asking anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
