Long Island Weather: Severe Storms Possible For PM Commute

Isolated damaging winds and hail are possible today, with the best chance for bad weather as we're driving home.

The afternoon commute could be a rough one, with the risk for severe thunderstorms.

Isolated damaging winds and small hail are possible on Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.

The best chance for severe storms, which would bring dangerous lightning and heavy rainfall, will be from 3-6 p.m.

Rain is expected the rest of the afternoon. It will taper off this evening, the NWS says.

The greatest chance for severe thunderstorms will be in New York City and northeast New Jersey, so grab an umbrella before leaving the office today.

The threat of hail is small, the NWS says, but if Long Island does see any hail, it will mostly likely be in Nassau County. The chance of severe thunderstorms is lower in Suffolk County.

The current storm timeline:

  • 3 p.m: Rain, chance of thunderstorms
  • 4 p.m.: Rain, chance of thunderstorms
  • 5 p.m.: Rain, chance of thunderstorms
  • 6 p.m.: Rain likely
  • 7 p.m.: Chance of rain
  • 8 p.m.: Slight chance of rain

Total rainfall on the island could reach a third of an inch.

This is part of the same system causing severe weather in other parts of the country Tuesday, according to The Weather Channel.

The high temperature on Tuesday will be near 60 on Long Island, but it will cool down a few degrees on Wednesday when highs will be in the mid-50s, the NWS says.

The next chance of rain will come on Thursday. The weekend looks nice at the moment: Sunny skies and a high near 60 on both days.
