COMMACK, NY — Executive Steven Bellone urged Suffolk County residents to be careful as Tropical Storm Isaias rolls onto Long Island Tuesday.

In addition to the storm, a tornado watch is in effect for Long Island until 4 p.m. There's about a 10 percent chance of a tornado on Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.

"We encourage people to stay off the roads, stay inside if you can," Bellone said. "In the extreme weather events that have become, unfortunately, commonplace here, we have seen tornadoes strike, and we know they cause significant damage when they occur. So the fact that we are under a tornado watch, given the conditions of the storm right now, that is a real concern."

The county is preparing for high winds, heavy rain and power outages when the peak of the storm hits, which is expected from noon to 5 p.m., Bellone said. The biggest impacts of the storm will be just to the west of Suffolk, he said, calling it "very good news." The storm should also move out in a "fairly rapid fashion," he said.

"It is important, however, for people to understand that this is still a serious storm," Bellone said. "It is a real storm with real impacts. First and foremost is those high winds. We are going to see significant winds; 40 MPH. Gusts up to 65 MPH. Of course, as we have previously advised, people should take every precaution; certainly around their house, securing any loose items, making sure nothing is going to be damaged or become a projectile in an environment like this."

Power outages are a concern due to the high winds, Bellone said. PSEG is taking the storm "very seriously," Bellone said. For residents who experience an outage, text "OUT" to 773454 or call 1-800-490-0075.

The county will also watch for high tides to see if flooding occurs. Those in low-lying areas, specifically the south shore, should prepare accordingly, Bellone said.
