Thunderstorms May Impact Evening Commute on Long Island

The storms have the potential to produce strong wind gusts, the National Weather Service says.

A line of thunderstorms is approaching the region and may impact Long Island this afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service says.

The strongest storms are expected to remain north and west of the island, but any storms that do hit the area will have the potential to produce strong wind gusts, the NWS says.

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for all of Nassau County, as well as western Suffolk County.

It was 82 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport at 1:56 p.m., but the humidity is making it feel several degrees warmer. Friday will be downright steamy as temperatures may hit the 90-degree mark on some parts of Long Island.

Thursday Afternoon: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 72. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light west after midnight.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 85.
