NORTH BABYLON, NY β€” One of the three businesses taking over the site of the former Pathmark supermarket in North Babylon will officially be opening this year. Aldi is constructing the new supermarket on 1251 Deer Park Avenue, which is expected to open by this summer.

The 90,000 square-foot space will also house a Planet Fitness gym and a CubeSmart self storage facility. The Pathmark shut down in 2015 following the announcement that their parent company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

Since opening its first Aldi supermarket in 2011, the chain has opened a total of six locations on Long Island including in Patchogue, Lake Grove, Lindenhurst, Riverhead, Selden and Bay Shore. In addition, Aldi will be opening its first Nassau County store in Valley Stream next week.

"The goal of our expansion nationally and locally is to reach new shoppers, and we are growing on Long Island because people want ALDI in their communities," Bruce Persohn, South Windsor division vice president for ALDI said. "We’ve been operating on Long Island and in New York City for nearly 10 years and have been very successful, which is why we’re opening new stores, including our first store in Nassau County. ALDI customers trust us to offer an easy, enjoyable grocery shopping experience with the high-quality food and products they need at the lowest prices, and that’s why they love shopping with us. No matter what, we won’t be beat on price."
