Alvin Toney Remembered In Wyandanch And Beyond After Death

The influential music producer and beloved football coach was honored at Sunday funeral by many from his hometown.

WYANDANCH, NY β€” Alvin Toney was a well-known music producer from Wyandanch whose death affected many, who saw him as a positive influence on many in his community. Toney died April 8 at age 54. His funeral service this past Sunday was crowded with well-wishers, and a memorial drive-in movie night was held Saturday night in his honor in Wyandanch.


Toney grew up in Wyandanch, playing Police Athletic League (PAL) football. He would eventually establish his own music label and is credited as having discovered late Long Island rapper Craig Mack. Toney produced Mack's 1994 hit song "Flava In Ya Year." Prominent rap artist Rakim, who hails from Wyandanch, also worked with Toney.

The father of nine became a beloved coach for PAL youth players. Gerren Nixon of Wyandanch was one.

"Alvin was a great father, grandfather, mentor and leader throughout the community. He was loved by all for his big heart, his generosity, guidance and encouragement that he shared with many," Nixon told Patch.

Nixon said he considered Toney one of his mentors.
