Amityville Beach Closed To Bathing

The beach was shut down after high levels of bacteria were found.

AMITYVILLE, NY - Amityville Beach in the Town of Babylon is closed to bathing due to the presence of bacteria at levels that exceed acceptable criteria, the Suffolk County Department of Health announced on Wednesday.

In addition, the following beaches remain shut down:

  • Tanner Park Beach, Town of Babylon
  • Huntington Beach Community Association Beach, Town of Huntington
  • Centerport Yacht Club Beach, Town of Huntington
  • Valley Grove Beach, Town of Huntington
  • Islip Town Beach at Lake Ronkonkoma

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

West Oaks Recreation Club Beach, Bayport Beach, and Sayville Marina Park Beach -- located in the Town of Islip -- Knollwood Beach Association Beach in the Town of Huntington, and Venetian Shores Beach in the Town of Babylon have reopened.
