Deer Park 5th Grader Receives Surprise Skype Call

Malachi Keaton was surprised during class with a Skype call from father Terrance, who is stationed in Kuwait with the Army National Guard.

Malachi Keaton, a fifth-grader at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, was anticipating summer break during Marie Finley’s class when a familiar face came up on the classroom screen.

Terrance Keaton, Malachi’s Army National Guard specialist dad, whom he hadn’t seen in six months, was Skyping the class from Kuwait where is attached to part of an aviation support battalion.

β€œThe best part was when Mr. Keaton came onto the screen and Malachi yelled, β€˜Daddy! Daddy!’ and slid off the chair,” said Marie. β€œThere wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

During the school year, Marie’s class had been pen pals with Terrance and his troop and sent them care packages. During the Skype call, the class asked Terrance, who is going on his third year of service, about his duties and how it feels to serve his country, and he showed them a battle helicopter.

At home, Terrance is stationed in Ronkonkoma near Long Island MacArthur Airport, where he keeps UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for civilian emergencies.
