Deer Park Student Earns Spelling Success

Robert Frost eighth-grader Rebecca Fox to compete in bee at Hofstra.

Robert Frost Middle School eighth-grader Rebecca Fox earned victory in the school’s annual spelling bee on Jan. 6, which served as the qualifying round for the local edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students competed to represent Robert Frost at Hofstra University’s final local edition on Feb. 8.

The first step in establishing Robert Frost’s single representative for the Hofstra competition took place in students’ language arts classes, where they completed a preliminary spelling assessment of 20 unfamiliar words. The highest preliminary assessment scorers from each grade level were invited to participate in the school wide spelling bee, with Fox clinching the championship by spelling the word β€œemporium” correctly.

β€œOur school is very proud of Rebecca and wishes her the best when she competes at Hofstra next month,” said Christina Poppe, Deer Park’s curriculum associate for English language arts, reading and library.
