Long Island Weather: Temperatures Near Record Highs, Strong Thunderstorms Possible

BREAKING: Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesda. Temperatures will be near record highs and an air quality alert is in effect.

The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook for Long Island:

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for this afternoon and evening in association with a cold frontal passage. A few storms may become strong, possibly severe, with strong to damaging winds being the primary threat.

Any storms are likely to be "short-lived," the NWS says.

For a second straight day, temperatures on Tuesday will challenge record highs. Here's a few of the projected high temperatures across the island:

An air quality alert, issued when air pollution levels are elevated, is in effect for the entire island from 10 a.m until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The New York State Department of Health recommends that people consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.

Drier and cooler conditions are expected Wednesday as temperatures return to more seasonable levels.

The full forecast:

Tuesday- A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 7 to 15 mph.

Tuesday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming north after midnight.

Wednesday- Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 76. Northeast wind 7 to 9 mph.

Wednesday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 54. East wind 6 to 9 mph.

Thursday- Sunny, with a high near 70. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph.

Thursday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Friday- A 40 percent chance of showers after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72.

Friday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 61.
