βWe are proud to declare March 2021 as Irish American Heritage Month to represent the hard work and contributions Irish Americans have made within the Town of Babylon,β said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. βThe AOH has been imbedded in the fabric of the Babylon community for 75 years, and this recognition acknowledges those Irish Americans who embody the blue-collar roots of our town.β
The ceremony was held on March 2 on the steps of Town Hall, where Supervisor Schaffer read the official proclamation alongside Deputy Town Supervisor Tony Martinez, and AOH St. Patrickβs Division 2 President Jim Killen. Also accompanying them were two pipers from the local Saffron United Pipe Band, who performed during the ceremony. Ahead of St. Patrickβs Day this month, the Town of Babylon honored its Irish American residents and their contributions to the Town. The AOH was instrumental during the response to Hurricane Sandy, who worked closely with the local American Legion to provide residents a place of shelter and refuge during the stormβs widespread effects.

In celebration of Irish American Heritage Month, the AOH has planned several events throughout the month. These include Irish step dancing and weekly Irish movie nights. All events will strictly follow the COVID-19 safety regulations as set forth by New York State, which require all attendees to wear masks and maintain proper social distancing. Any indoor events will have limited capacities in order to accommodate these regulations.
