The LIRR is a Mess Right Now

Not a great start to the week for LIRR commuters.

There are 30-45 minute westbound delays on the Long Island Rail Road Monday morning due to the four words no commuter wants to hear, "Signal trouble at Jamaica."

"Signal personnel are on scene. We'll update you shortly," the LIRR posted on its website at 7:24 a.m. There have been no updates since that time.

There have also been delays and cancellations because of a "shortage of equipment related to the ongoing track and signal work for Cherry Lane Bridge replacement project."

The only LIRR branch with no delays as of 8:50 a.m. is the Port Washington, which not surprisingly is the only LIRR branch that doesn't run through Jamaica.

State Assemb. Doug Smith, R-Holbrook, blasted the LIRR in a statement on his Facebook page Monday morning.

"For what we’ve paid over the years we should have top tier train service on Long Island," Smith said. "How can we expect to grow our economy when we have the worst traffic congestion and unreliable mass transit into the city?"

The latest LIRR fare hike went into effect in April.
