N. Babylon Soccer Star Going Pro

Leonardo Fernandes drafted by Philadelphia Union of MLS.

Leonardo Fernandes once dominated the soccer fields at North Babylon High School. Now, he's turing pro.

On Tuesday, Fernandes was drafted by the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. A member of North Babylon’s Class of 2009, he recently completed a four-year playing career at Stony Brook University and finished as the Seawolves all-time leader in points scored with 79.

β€œWe are very excited for Leo and his opportunity," said Ryan Anatol, Stony Brook’s head coach. β€œHe has earned it.”

In his senior year, Fernandes led Stony Brook with nine goals and seven assists and scored the game-winning goal in five of the Seawolves 11 victories.

In 2012, he was named a second-team All-American, the first for Stony Brook men’s soccer and received third-team honors from College Soccer News. Fernandes was also previously named first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Northeast Region (NSCAA) in 2012 and 2011 and third-team NSCAA All-Northeast Region 2010.

In high school, Fernandes earned first team All-State and All-Region honors and was named Most Valuable Player of League III his senior year scoring 14 goals and 34 total points.Β
