NORTH BABYLON, NY β€” The new Aldi in North Babylon is set to open this week. The grocery store chain will be opening the new location on 1251 Deer Park Avenue on Thursday.

The supermarket is one of the three businesses taking over the site of the former Pathmark supermarket, which shut down in 2015 following the announcement that their parent company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., filed for bankruptcy in 2012. The 90,000 square-foot space will also house a Planet Fitness gym and a CubeSmart self storage facility.

The North Babylon location will be the eight Aldi on Long Island, with stores in Patchogue, Lake Grove, Lindenhurst, Riverhead, Selden, Bay Shore and Valley Stream.

The new stores in North Babylon and Valley Stream were part of an over $5 billion investment in nationwide growth to update existing Aldi stores and to open hundreds of new locations across the country. This summer, the chain opened more than 2,000 stores and announced plans to open about 70 new stores by the end of the year.

"Long Island is an important market for us, and we are proud to be opening our second new store this year," Chris Daniels, South Windsor division vice president for Aldi said. "Opening new stores and providing even more customers access to healthy, low-price groceries has always been one of our top priorities, and it’s more critical now than ever before. While food costs are rising across the country, our Long Island stores offer prices that are significantly lower than the competition."
