Woman Turns 100 and Gets a Surprise

Ethel Weber joined an elite club Friday, celebrating her 100th birthday with a surprise party at Apex Rehabilitation in Huntington Station.

Along with a cake, the party featured singer Joe Pace performing group favorites, such as Sweet Caroline and several Big Band tunes and other residents sang Happy Birthday. Residents in wheelchairs swayed to the music while at least one danced with a staff member. 

Weber said she spent most of her life in Queens before moving out to live with her daughter Joan in Deer Park for 10 years. About two years ago, she moved into the Apex center. She was born in Brooklyn.

In addition to three children, Weber has 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. 

"I had a wonderful party, I didn't expect it," Weber said as she surveyed the room full of residents. She attributes her longevity to family--her mother lived to be 102--and not smoking or drinking. 

The Town of Huntington issued a proclamation in her honor, making the day Ethel Weber Day.

She was born when Woodrow Wilson was president.

Her daughter said her mother enjoys playing the card game Phase 10; both agreed that she occasionally cheats at the game.
