SHEEPSHEAD BAY, BROOKLYN — Early Monday evening on the southern edge of the borough, 62-year-old Gravesend resident Eleanora Shulkina became the third Brooklyn woman in under six weeks to be killed by an MTA bus, according to NYPD data.
The NYPD’s initital investigation has determined that Shulkina was killed as she crossed East 17th Street from east to west at Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay around 6 p.m.
“An MTA B36 bus was travelling eastbound on Avenue Z where it made a left turn onto East 17 Street and struck the 62-year-old female,” police said in a statement.
The bus driver stayed at the scene, police said, while Shulkina, “unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to her head,” was rushed to Coney Island Hospital. The victim was declared dead soon after.
“There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad,” police said.
In early November, 70-year-old Bed-Stuy resident Carol Bell was killed near her home by a hit-and-run MTA bus driver. Paul Roper, the 48-year-old MTA employee behind the wheel, was later charged with “leaving the scene of an accident,” “failure to yield to pedestrian” and ”failure to exercise due care.”
Then, in later November, 41-year-old Midwood resident Rukhsana Khan, a mother of six, was killed by another MTA bus, also in front of her Brooklyn home — reportedly while walking to her son’s babysitter’s house.
