The FDA announced the recall after a routine test by a “contracted private laboratory” reportedly revealed the presence of Salmonella in the two-pound packages of both types of macadamia nuts listed above.
Production of these products has since been suspended.
As of this writing, no illnesses had been reported in connection to Salmonella-infested macadamia nuts.
Symptoms of Salmonella include ” fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the FDA says. “In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
