Brooklyn Wallet Thief Returns Cards, Keeps Subway Pass 'Because the Fare's $2.75 Now'

He's got a point.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — The sort-of Good Samaritan who came across Reilly Flaherty’s wallet at a Wilco show in Flatbush two Saturdays ago felt it his duty, apparently, to return the majority of the wallet’s contents to their rightful holder.

But come on, now. This is New York. It’s every sort-of Good Samaritan for himself out here.

So, as the wallet finder explained to Flaherty in a handwritten letter — which he tucked into an envelope with Flaherty’s credit cards ”and other important stuff” and mailed to the address on Flaherty’s ID— ”I kept the cash because I needed weed, the MetroCard because well the fare’s $2.75 now, and the wallet because it’s kinda cool.”

The letter is signed only, “Anonymous.”

Flaherty told the New York Post that his wallet thief’s attitude “speaks to the New York mentality” of ”I’m going to be nice but there’s going to be an asterisk.”

Still, we’ve got to admit: Dude’s got a point about the MetroCard.

The MTA has yet to issue any sort of rebuttal to Anonymous, that we’ve seen. Meanwhile, Kings Theatre, the Flatbush Avenue concert hall that hosted Wilco, has reportedly comped Flaherty two free tickets to the show of his choice. (A small price to pay, really, for the absurd amount of press generated for their venue by everyone’s new favorite Brooklyn stoner turned sort-of wallet thief.)
