Man Dies, 6 Hurt In East Flatbush Blaze, Cops Say

EAST FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — A man died and six residents were hurt when a fire tore through an East Flatbush building early Monday morning, officials said.

Firefighters rushed to the 1776 Nostrand Ave. building just before 4 a.m. after hearing that a fire had broken out on the top floor, an FDNY spokesperson said. The fire would take more than an hour and 106 firefighters to extinguish.

By the time the flames were under control around 5:15 a.m., seven civilians had been hurt by the two-alarm fire. A police officer was also injured, the spokesperson said.

One of the people hurt, a man who cops say was found unresponsive in the building, later died at the hospital, police said. The others who were hurt were also brought to the hospital.

The fire broke out in a three-story building that has an driving school and immigration services business on its bottom floor and apartments in the top floors, records show.
