Neighbors Rally Around Teen Orphaned By Brooklyn Car Crash
Brooklynites are trying to raise $12,500 for Anna Karen Porras, who became an orphan when her mother was fatally struck by a car this week.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — New Yorkers have raised more than $8,000 for a Brooklyn teenager whose only parent was killed in a car crash this week.
Neighbors have launched a GoFundMe campaign for Ana Karen Porras, 13, whose mother MarÃa del Carmen Porras Hernández, 49, was fatally hit by a car on Coney Island and Church avenues Monday morning.
"Nothing will bring her mother back," wrote organizer Louis Varela Nevaer. "But as a community we can support this young girl who, between middle school and high school, has suffered a devastating blow: becoming an orphan."

Nevaer, whom Bklyner reports to be a neighbor of the late Porras-Hernandez, launched the $12,500 GoFundMe Wednesday to raise money for Ana's school expenses and extended educaiton, he wrote.
Ana is being cared for by her aunt Laura Porras as the girl's father has been "long absent from her life" and is about to start high school in September, according to the campaign.

Nevaur asked initially for $5,000 but when an anonymous donor pledged the entire amount, he upped the ask.
More than 50 people had contributed as of Thursday afternoon and raised $8,046.
"This is overwhelming," he wrote. "The family will be notified of the generosity of the community."
While city dwellers rally to support Ana, another Brooklyn woman faces criminal charges stemming from the crash that claimed her mother's life.
Claudette Crosby, 63, was charged with failure to yield and exercise due care for her role in the crash, police said.
Porras-Hernandez' funeral is slated to take place Thursday, according to Nevaer.
