Park Slope Food Coop Considers Central Brooklyn For 2nd Location

The Park Slope Coop wants to know if its second location should open in your neighborhood.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — The Park Slope Food Coop is considering opening a second outpost in central Brooklyn and wants residents to vote on which neighborhood would be best .

Park Slope Food Coop organizers launched a survey on Thursday asking New Yorkers which of 19 neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens would be best primed for a new cooperative market.

More than a third of those 19 neighborhoods — Crown Heights, Ditmas Park, Flatbush, Kensington, Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Windsor Terrace — are located in central Brooklyn.

The co-op is also considering three Queens neighborhoods — Astoria, Sunnyside and Woodside — three spots in northern Brooklyn — Bed-Stuy, Bushwick and Greenpoint — and three in southern Brooklyn; Bay Ridge, South Slope and Sunset Park.

The survey doesn't specify which locations are being considered for the second food co-op or when it might open, but organizers promised to publish the results in a "comprehensive study" this summer.

The 17,000 member-co-op has been nearing capacity in its two buildings on Union Street in Park Slope, which prompted organizers to launch a study committee to look into a new location in 2016.

The Park Slope Food Coop, which first opened in 1973, is open only to members who must works shifts to gain access to cheaper prices on groceries, according to the store’s website.

The survey is open to the public but does ask users to state whether or not they are members of the Park Slope Coop.
