SUV That Struck South Brooklyn Teacher Stayed On Scene: NYPD

Police initially reported that Hermanda Booker was the victim of a hit-and-run.

MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN — Hermanda Booker, a 29-year-old Flatlands teacher fatally struck by two vehicles in Midwood on Tuesday morning, was not the victim of a hit-and-run, police have said.

Booker was hit by an SUV and school bus on the morning of Jan. 3 as she crossed Nostrand Avenue at its intersection with Kings Highway, police said.

The NYPD initially reported that the SUV fled the scene, but subsequently stated that the driver remained at the site of the accident. A department spokeswoman said Thursday that the initial NYPD report was in error. Initial reports are always preliminary, she said, and can be updated later with new information.

Booker was a special education teacher at the Highland Park Community School in Cypress Hills, according to NY1, while her LinkedIn page stated that she was getting a Master's Degree in Women's Studies at the University of Albany.

“She was one of the best kids you can ever have,” Booker's father, Herman, told The New York Post.

"I was shocked," a co-worker, Sam Maslow, said to ABC News, referring to when he heard about the tragedy. "I had to leave my classroom and take some time. I want the world to know she loved her students."

According to data from the city's Vision Zero program, 23 pedestrians were injured at the intersection of Kings Highway and Nostrand Avenue between 2010 and the end of 2016, though none were killed.
