Units Going Up Where NYC Mayor Plotted George Washington's Death

A former NYC mayor was arrested on the same Flatbush street corner where developers are now building modern apartments.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — A historic Flatbush Avenue corner — where a New York City mayor once plotted to assassinate General George Washington — is getting a new building on top of an old one.

Developers plan to enlarge the three-story building at 715 Flatbush Ave. by adding an extra story with six apartments, city records show.

Construction on the building — which currently has one retail space and two apartments — is expected to wrap up by May 2019, Department of Buildings records show.

City records show Beam Architects designed the new addition, which bloggers at Flatbushed described as an “appendage” that “appears to resemble a neat stack of Amazon Prime delivery boxes.”

Flatbushed also noted the street corner was once home to Mayor David Matthews, who was arrested in his Flatbush Avenue retreat in 1776 for trying to murder the general who would become the first United States president.
