PATCH: For decades, music legends have come from Southern California such as Snoop Dog and the late Nipsey Hussle. Do you feel that you have one “set” genre or how have you created your own unique sound?

MillsWasChosen: I believe I’ve created multiple sounds that people can identify me from. That’s one of my strengths. Not only am I a rapper but an artist too. Being an artist/producer makes it easier for me to execute my sound in ways most rappers can’t. West Coast music has always been an inspiration but as you go through my catalogue you’ll hear sprinkles of southern and east coast soundscapes as well.

PATCH: What top music artists from your hometown do you admire most and why?

MillsWasChosen: I think we have some great artists in the Inland Empire but very few have actually cemented their brand to make the region proud. Don’t get me wrong, there are artist such as Noah James and Jayellz who have made some major pushes with their sound and what they do for the culture but most artists don’t have the discipline or vision.

PATCH: What music artist would you like to collaborate with in the near future?

MillsWasChosen: Honestly I used to think about this all the time but now of days I’m so in tune with what I want to convey to the world that I’m not focused in looking for a feature. I love artists like Mozzy, G Herbo and Dave East as far as rappers and I would love to lock in with Roddy Ricdh but I’m not really pressed. If the opportunity presents itself then it’s God’s plan.

PATCH: How did growing up in Southern California influence your lyrical style?

MillsWasChosen: So-Cal influenced my lyrical style in almost every way. One of my favorite rappers was Tupac growing up, so he was probably the first rapper I studied inside out. Plus I’m rooted here, born and raised. All of my music comes from a first hand basis of things that I’ve experienced growing up in Cali. When I rap a lot of people say I remind them of Nipsey which I understand because he’s definitely a major influence to me as well.

PATCH: On a scale of 1 to 100 (100 being the best) how good is the next single you are dropping compared to the last one you released?

MillsWasChosen: I would say 100, non bias. The last single I dropped (Reachin) was more of a pop type of song with autotune on my voice. It’s a great song and it served its purpose but this new single is raw and uncut. Not too many effects and it explains exactly where I’m at in life right now. Content, delivery and production are all on another level.

PATCH: What aspect of the music making process excites you the most?

MillsWasChosen: It used to be creating it but now of days it’s more so the roll out. I like seeing the world’s reaction to my thoughts and ideas. It’s always the most satisfying and interesting stage.

PATCH: Being an independent artist, what are the top three factors that you desire the most (increased music distribution, marketing, better quality production, touring, increased media exposure, digital campaigns…)

MillsWasChosen: Being that in this day and age technology is forever evolving things like; marketing and extreme media exposure are things that would definitely help me out as an independent artist. The last thing is touring. Between those 3 things I feel like together they will accelerate my career in ways that I couldn’t do alone.

PATCH: Your videos are well done, how important is it in your eyes to shoot your visuals in California since this is where it all began for you? Or does that not factor into the storyboards on your videos?

MillsWasChosen: Being that I’m from a very small town in one of the largest counties in California, it is very essential that I get most of my videos shot in California because a lot of the locations I’m at, the rest of the world may never see unless they watch a MillsWasChosen video.

PATCH: What has been your single greatest challenge as a music artist to date in your career?

MillsWasChosen: My biggest challenge is keeping everyone focused. As independent artist, your job is spread thin everyday unless you have a super solid team. Having a solid team is essential as an independent artist because whenever you’re lacking your team picks up the slack and vice versa. Also, everyone brings their own strengths to the table. When you let life problems get in the way of progression you’ve already lost. So keeping everyone on track is my biggest challenge because you never know how what life is going to throw at you.

PATCH: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

MillsWasChosen: Two things. One, that an artist would always own the rights to their masters. Two, established playmakers in the game need to be less selfish and at least drop gems to help the next man succeed no matter there status.

PATCH: What can your fans expect from your newest project?

MillsWasChosen: A lot of unapologetic, honest, rap music. With my last push it put me in a position where I have eyes on me. Now that I have everyone’s attention it’s time to execute. Be expecting something by the end of summer 2019.
